    1. Main role and responsibilities

The following section describes the main goal in establishing the R&D extension position at the account, in order to enable a “close to the customer” approach for PDC’s PD division.

In general, the R&D technology extension position is designed to enable the PD to have an on-site physicist who is intimately familiar with the tool’s technology, and also intimately familiar with the customer, the wafers and the high value problems.

This position is designed to assist with tasks that cannot be done remotely by the PDC team and requires continuous on site work.

It is also the long term goal of this position to be able to provide the customer with a knowledgeable R&D point of contact that is always present on-site for collaboration.

The following bullets describe in more details the reasoning behind this position:

·         Direct report to the PD Technology group in PDC with responsibility for the following:

·         Simulate light-matter/electron  interaction and optical imaging using both commercial tools and in-house software

·         Analysis and empirical and  experimental data in the field of wafer inspection & imaging

·         Expert technical focal capable of understanding the system performance, and suitable for customer facing presentations and collaboration

·         High level knowledge in the system design , enabling fault isolation of complex problems outside of the scope of the GPS or a specific module specialist. Capability to collaborate with PDC’s system engineers, and perform fault isolation tests, to assist in problem resolution and customer situation management.

·         Direct link between the R&D to the field / customer for any Data / Solution transfer and dialogue

·         Understand the customer’s needs and challenges and our tools’ performance and gaps, be able to translate it into a problem statement and potential solution


    2. Priorities on site

Our experience from the existing R&D extension teams shows that we need to set clear priorities for the R&D extension engineer in order to focus the employee on the job description above, and provide clear guidelines to differentiate between this role and other adjacent employees such as application engineers, local CE’s or GPS on site.

The roles can be divided into 3 main priorities, and will also differ by how they are managed on a daily basis.

·         First priority : Work on customer’s HVP , detection gaps and other tool performance gaps, typically requiring physicists from the PDC technology team.

·         Second priority: Assist in complex system troubleshooting or system performance analysis, typically requiring a system engineer from the PDC system team.

·         Third priority: Perform on-going long term tasks for the technology team. Typically tasks that can benefit from the close proximity to the customer and relevant wafers.


            2.1. Priority 1: Technology team extension on-site

As a technology team extension, the R&D extension physicist is required to learn the optics and algorithms of the tool to a level equivalent to the PDC technology team.

Thereafter he / she is expected to work on-tool at the customer site on the most critical detection / performance issues, as required by the customer, performing the following tasks :

·         Gap layer sensitivity analysis on the relevant wafers

·         Signal simulation based on CAD and material properties

·         Noise analysis to determine the root cause of the dominant noise sources

·         Issue BKM’s based on the analysis above to yield the optimal tool performance on the problematic layers.

·         Provide theoretical explanations to the customer regarding the findings and potential improvements

·         Develop a collaborative relationship with the customer and identify the high value problems that need PDC’s attention


            2.2. Priority 2: System team extension on-site

As a system team extension, the R&D extension physicist is required to learn the tool system. As opposed to the previous section which dealt mainly with optics, image formation and detection SNR, this section deals with all the surrounding modules that effect TPT, accuracy, tool logic, control etc.

Following a training program, the extension engineer is expected to be able to assist with fault isolation and analysis of complex tool performance issues.

Typically, these issues will be beyond the scope of knowledge of the local CE or GPS engineers, or specific module experts, especially when the root cause is an integrative function spanning multiple modules of HW / SW.

The R&D extension engineer is expected to be able to define on-tool tests, collaborate with the system team at PDC, and lead the CE’s and GPS engineers on site to a methodic solution of the problem.

The R&D extension engineer is also expected to assist in the communication and collaboration with the customer regarding tool performance issues, and their resolution path.

·         Define / validate problem statement

·         Define RCA process, including the required on-tool tests.

·         Perform on-tool tests and analyze results in collaboration with the team at PDC.

·         Resolve issue and provide the proper report to the customer.


            2.3. Priority 3: Long term on-going system / technology projects

At any given time, the PDC’s technology team is working on numerous short and long term tasks designed to optimize the performance of the current platform, as well as develop technologies for the next generation platform.

Many of these tasks require extensive on-tool experiments on relevant customer wafers.

The R&D extension engineer is expected to take on individual tasks running in the technology and system teams, and progress with these topics.


    3. Required Skills

·         Excellent analytical skills

·         Background in scattering theory and/or optics, theoretical physics, etc. – Preferred

·         3 years of experience in semi-conductor industry – preferred

·         Hands-on capabilities

·         Leading empirical experiments, from inception & definition, through execution, till the final conclusions.

·         Good interpersonal relations, Good communication & presentation skills

·         Can work in a dynamic and changing environment

·         Independent, can work in an open environment and efficiently manage his own work

·         Good English

·         Matlab programming – Preferred

 

·         Travel:

o   Needs to come for 3 months training at PDC

o   Should come for frequent visits in PDC (2-3 times/year)

 


    4. Formal Education Requirements:

·         Minimum of MsC in Physics or Electrical Engineering (if there is a major in a relevant field e.g, electro-optics, image processing, signal processing)

·         Bonus for a PhD in Physics with strong background and interest in computational physics as well as experience in Lab.
