Scholarship Regulations

Prohibition of Overlapping Financial Aid

The total amount of scholarships and student loans supporting tuition (both internal and external) cannot exceed the tuition fees. However, scholarships for non-tuition support can be received in combination with other financial aid.

Obligation for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Fields

National Excellence STEM Scholars (Presidential Science Scholars, National Excellence STEM Scholars) who change their major to a field outside of STEM or enter a non-STEM field after graduation will have their scholarship funds recouped in accordance with relevant laws and regulations.

As of June 21, 2025, recipients of National Excellence STEM scholars will no longer be subject to recoupment obligation for failing to fulfill their mandatory service in the science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM) field. (This applies to previously selected recipients as well, excluding those whose recoupment is already deferred or currently in progress.)

Legal Basis: Article 9-2 of the Special Act for Enhancing National Science and Technology Competitiveness

  • Recoupment Target: National Excellence STEM Scholars who change their major to a non-STEM field or fail to work in a STEM-related industry, academia, or research during the mandatory service period after graduation.
  • Interruption of Studies: If a student withdraws or is expelled, they will lose their scholarship eligibility, and the scholarship for the relevant semester must be returned.
  • Mandatory Service: National Excellence Scholars must work in a STEM-related industry, academia, or research for the duration of the scholarship period after graduation.
  • Total Mandatory Service Period = Number of scholarship payments x 6 months x 30 days
Recoupment Process Guidelines

The National Scholarship Integrated Application process substitutes for the application process for tuition support scholarships (Basic Scholarship).

  • Undergraduate students seeking financial aid must apply for the National Scholarship every semester.
  • Students who wish to apply for scholarships requiring income information must apply for the National Scholarship every semester.
