Dongkuk Steel made a generous contribution to humanities and social sciences
Prof. Jin-Woo Lee is selected as the first Dongkuk Endowed Professor
Dongkuk Steel Group, a company that has devoted itself to the steel industry since its establishment, will now support the advancement of humanities and social sciences of POSTECH.
On December7, Sae-Joo Chang, the president of the Dongkuk Steel Group made an agreement with POSTECH to make financial contributions for the advancement of humanities and social sciences at POSTECH. According to the agreement, Dongkuk Steel is to make donations totaling KRW 1.5 billion by 2011, and Mr. Chang handed KRW 500 million to President Baik that day.
This fund will be used as the Dongkuk Endowed Professor Fund, which will support a selected professor in the field of humanities and social sciences for three years. Professor Jin-Woo Lee in the Division of Humanities and Social Sciences is selected as the first Dongkuk Endowed Professor. In addition, the fund will be spent on inviting domestic and foreign prominent scholars for special lectures, named the “Dongkuk Humanities & Social Sciences Lectures,” that POSTECH will be hosting every year.
Prof. Lee majored in German at Yonsei University and received his MS and PhD in philosophy from the University of Augsburg in Germany, where he worked as a full-time instructor upon receiving his PhD. He taught philosophy and served as the Provost and the eighth president at Keimyung University until September, 2010, when he was appointed as the head of the Division of Humanities and Social Sciences at POSTECH. He is one of the leading philosophers in Korea and has written 15 books, translated 17 books, and published 82 papers.
