Bum Hyun Kim, a PhD/MS student from the Department of Electrical Engineering at Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH), under the guidance of Professor Wonbin Hong, has secured the esteemed Best Student Paper Award at the 2024 IEEE European Conference on Antennas and Propagation (EuCAP 2024).

This accomplishment follows in the footsteps of POSTECH alumnus Junho Park (Electrical Engineering), who made history as the first non-European recipient of the EuCAP honor in 2020.

Kim’s awarded submission, titled “A Completely Overlapped Ku- and Ka-Band Dual-Polarized Phased Array for Simultaneous Terrestrial and Satellite Communications,” marks a pioneering breakthrough in antenna design.

Exploring innovative methodologies rooted in the shared aperture concept and cavity model interpretation, Kim’s paper elucidates a novel approach to designing dual-band, dual-polarized phased array antennas, aiming to maximize spatial efficiency and antenna performance. Notably, the frequency band extension and downsized structural advantages have garnered significant recognition for their contributions to next-generation applications.

IEEE EuCAP, organized by the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society, stands as one of the three major international academic conferences in the field and is the largest of its kind in Europe. This year’s conference was held in Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom and saw a total of 987 papers contributed.

Bum Hyun Kim’s accolades extend further, as he was honored with the top prize at this year’s Korean Institute of Electromagnetic Engineering (KIEES) Winter Conference, following his previous win of the 1st Prize Best Student Paper Award at the prestigious IEEE International Workshop on Antenna Technology (iWAT 2023) held last year.
