[Among the World's Top 15 for Three Straight Years… Reaffirming Its Research Competitiveness in Metallic Materials]

POSTECH has ranked first in Korea in Metallurgical Engineering in ShanghaiRanking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) for 10 consecutive years, from 2017 to 2026. GRAS began evaluating Metallurgical Engineering in 2017, and POSTECH has held the top spot in Korea every year since then.

  POSTECH also ranked 10th in the world in 2025 and 11th in 2026, reaffirming its international research competitiveness in metallic materials and manufacturing processes. ShanghaiRanking evaluates the research capabilities of universities worldwide in each academic subject, based on indicators such as research output, academic influence, and international collaboration.

  Metallurgical Engineering is a core field that covers steel, high-temperature materials, lightweight metals, metal manufacturing processes, and resource recycling technologies. High-performance metallic materials and advanced process technologies are becoming more important as the world moves toward carbon neutrality, the energy industry changes, and the aerospace and defense industries grow.

  The Graduate Institute of Ferrous & Eco Materials Technology (GIFT) is a key education and research hub leading POSTECH's research in Metallurgical Engineering and metallic materials. Its education and research span metal manufacturing, property control, process technology, and analysis and application. GIFT has recently been linking these traditional strengths with energy materials and advanced manufacturing technologies to help solve technical challenges in industry and train the next generation of experts.

  "Ranking first in Korea for 10 consecutive years and ranking among the world's top 15 in recent years show that the research capabilities in Metallurgical Engineering and metallic materials that POSTECH has built over many years are recognized internationally," said Prof. Hyoung Seop Kim,  Dean of GIFT. "Going forward, GIFT will expand these strengths into carbon-neutral metal processing, energy materials, and advanced manufacturing technologies. We will produce the research and talent needed to take the lead in solving the future challenges of industry."

  GIFT plans to build on the world-class research capabilities it has developed in metallic materials to strengthen its research in carbon-neutral processes, energy materials, and advanced manufacturing technologies. By working with POSCO and other industry partners and research institutions in Korea and abroad, it aims to become a global education and research hub leading the future materials industry.
